|Anthony C. Donahue
When Mad Mat Staver (of Liberty Counsel, an anti-LGBTQ hate group) needed a local lawyer to represent Kim Davis in 2015, he chose A.C. Donahue. Donahue’s direct involvement might have been limited but Davis did lose that case. According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, Donahue has also been affiliated with Alliance Defending Freedom, another anti-LGBTQ hate group.
A.C. Donahue (Anthony C. Donahue, sometimes Anthony Charles Donahue) has been appointed to the board of trustees of the University of Kentucky by Governor Matt Bevin. Is Mr. Donahue a great legal scholar? Probably not if you consider that his law degree is from Pat Robertson’s Regent University.
Is Mr. Donahue a noted legal authority? He is apparently a sole-practitioner whose practice is limited to collections and repossessions. He is an unlikely candidate to be responsible for any precedent-setting legal rulings.
The only appearance that Donahue has ever made in federal court was in Miller v. Davis. We might learn more about Donahue if his website had any content. It is null.
University of Kentucky is well known for its commitment to diversity. Donahue is unlikely to change that even if he wanted to. The board meets quarterly and, while legally the final authority on policy, the primary function of the board is the hiring and firing of the president of the university.
The greater point is that Governor Bevin has appointed a mediocre intellect to the board of trustees of a university with an enrollment of 30,000 across 16 colleges. Intellectual excellence has given way to Christian piety.
