Science deniers are science observers.
Science observers are science deniers.
An email from Alliance Defending Freedom is titled: White House ignores science. The unsigned email goes on to validate why ADF is deemed an anti-LGBTQ hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center. You probably already know what’s coming.
In 2017, Chelsea Mitchell was just a freshman in high school. And as a gifted athlete, she was looking forward to a promising career in track and field.
But that same year, male athletes who identify as female began competing in the girls’ track and field events. And it changed everything.
The problem is that these male athletes don’t just compete—they win.
I am quite certain that it was once said: “The problem is that these negro athletes don’t just compete-they win.”
Chelsea Mitchell was one of the plaintiffs in ADF’s case in Connecticut. Furthermore it is a case that ADF lost. Christianists who proclaim (in some version) that trans girls are “biological males who identify as females” will be deemed haters. Moreover, their organizations will be deemed hate groups.
“Religious extremists do not get to argue that they are on the right side of science.”
Religion does not excuse bigotry and aberrant behavior. People who subscribe to Christian supremacy bolstered by Christian privilege are arrogant. They also tend to insult the intelligence of just about everyone else.
Chances are that ADF never really gave a crap about Chelsea Mitchell or athletics. ADF’s goal is to marginalize transgender persons:
- To create a wedge issue favoring Republicans.
- To create a rift within the LGBTQ community.
- To defend scripture.
Lawyers affiliated with ADF are directly responsible for instigating, and authoring the boilerplate for, around 60 anti-trans bills making their way through state legislatures around the nation. These are cloaked in dishonest titles like Save Women’s Sports. Another version is: Save Adolescents From Experimentation (SAFE) Act.
“The intellectual dishonesty is almost as appalling as the bigotry.”
None of this has a damned thing to do with athletics or the safety of adolescents. As listed above, this is about imposing conservative Christian beliefs on everyone. In effect, every one of these bills is in violation of the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment to the Constitution.
Every season she felt the impact of this change—not advancing, not medaling … [BooHooEctomy] Naturally, Chelsea’s parents questioned the rationality of the policy that was denying fairness and opportunities to their daughter and other female athletes in the state.
Chelsea Mitchell’s parents — presumably conservative Christians based on their choice of counsel — predetermined (before questioning) that things were unfair. ADF’s narrative continues with pants-on-fire lies:
But the responses they received were shocking. Chelsea’s parents were told that:
- Males have no biological advantage in sports over females.
- There is no difference between their daughter and a biological boy who identifies as a girl.
- Title IX only gives girls a right to participate—not to win.
Item #1 is a deliberate lie. They were told that trans girls had no advantage in sports over cisgender girls. ADF is determined to portray trans females as males who have made some bad choices.
Dr. Jack Turban, an expert regarding transgender youth, wrote in a piece for Scientific American:
Item #2 is a repeat of item #1 while giving ADF’s author an opportunity to use transphobic language. A “biological boy who identifies as a girl” is deliberate hate speech.
Item #3 is absolutely correct. At least within the realm of rational language as commonly understood.
We get to the science part of the bullshit:
The Biden administration is denying both science and common sense
Within 24 hours of his inauguration, President Biden signed an executive order instructing federal agencies to reinterpret federal laws and regulations that prohibit sex discrimination to include “gender identity.”
With this executive order, the Biden administration denied both science and common sense, and declared that the real, biological differences between men and women don’t matter.
Religious extremists do not get to argue that they are on the right side of science. The science is best explained by the aforementioned Jack Turban. Turban’s essay at Scientific American is authoritative.
It is authoritative simply because Turban is, well, a scientist who has published a considerable number of papers regarding transgender youth to prestigious academic journals. No one in the employ of Alliance Defending Freedom has the training to make reliable statements regarding science and gender identity.
“Imagine the Taliban trying to project a secularized agenda.”
Furthermore, no one in the employ of ADF is really interested in the science. These are Christian warriors who presume to be defenders of the faith.
From there ADF goes off on a tear about the Equality Act eventually noting:
Thankfully, Chelsea and three other young female athletes are standing up to this blatant government overreach. They not only are vocal in their opposition to the “Equality Act,” but also have filed a lawsuit against the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference (CIAC) over its unfair policy.
Will you help these brave young women by making a tax-deductible gift right now?
First of all there is the lie of omission. They already lost that case. Secondly, apparently Chelsea Mitchell believes that LGBTQ persons do not deserve not to be discriminated against in public accommodations. That says something, not only about Mitchell, but about how she was raised by superstitious bigots to be a bigot.
This is an extremely verbose email. ADF lacks the discipline and skills to craft a much briefer appeal. One more quote:
When we stand together, we can WIN!
There’s nothing fair or progressive about allowing men to compete in women’s sports.
Experts continue to show that males have more muscle mass, greater bone size, and even more heart and lung capacity—which makes them stronger and faster. Taking hormone blockers does not eliminate those differences. And a male’s belief about his gender doesn’t cancel out his physical advantage over girls.
Experts? Name two. Numerous scientists were consultants to the NCAA when it crafted its policy of inclusion. ADF’s statements are not supported by scientific fact. ADF offers no evidence. It offers only vapid and baseless arguments.
The greatest lie of all is the omission by Alliance Defending Freedom of any religious basis for their anti-LGBTQ crusade. Imagine the Taliban trying to project a secularized agenda. The intellectual dishonesty is almost as appalling as the bigotry.
