♬ June is bustin’ out all over
All over the meadow and the hill! ♬
The lyric is from Carousel. Tim Wildmon (American Family Association) is spinning quite a bit faster than the roundabout. Every June I ponder: Is this the year when Wildmon corkscrews himself six feet under?
Taking back the Rainbow: Hidden Symbols in the Pride Flag
June is here and rainbow flags are popping up around the country to celebrate “Pride Month.” They are on company logos, business fronts, and sadly even some churches. But the rainbow was God’s idea! It’s both a symbol of God’s covenant promise to never again destroy the whole earth by water and a reminder that He will destroy the earth by fire one day. The rainbow is a beautiful reminder that God is both loving and just.
“It is not our culture that is ‘morally confused.’ AFA’s Tim Wildmon is morally confused.”
Wildmon is relying on a literal interpretation of Genesis 9:13-17. In Genesis 9 we also learn that Noah was 600 years of age at the time of the flood and lived to the ripe old age of 950 years.
Wildmon’s god can cause the light entering rain droplets to create a refraction that disperses light separated into wavelengths. Yet, he or she is unable to stop global climate change. The deity has rather selective inclinations.
Furthermore, if the god provides humanity with a positive symbol — a rainbow — then who is Wildmon to determine how it should be used? Let’s have your divine judgment Timmy. Was Judy Garland awash in sin?
There’s a land that I heard of once in a lullaby
Somewhere over the rainbow, skies are blue
And the dreams that you dare to dream
Really do come true
In ancient Greek mythology, Iris was the “goddess of the rainbow.” She was the messenger of the gods. She delivered the commands of the gods from Mount Olympus to the land of the mortals. The rainbow was used as a symbol of a bridge between heaven and earth. Is that any less plausible then the Genesis version?
This blatant misuse of the rainbow is further evidence that our culture is morally confused; but there’s something you can do to help spread the truth. If you would be so bold, we’d like to ask you to do two things this month.
It is not our culture that is “morally confused.” Mr. Wildmon is morally confused. Unless, of course, one subscribes to the premise that bigotry is not immoral.
The two things that Wildmon wants people to do:
- Purchase AFA’s DVD.
- Watch a video.
The video is on YouTube and it is obnoxious. It uses negative stereotypes to denigrate LGBTQ people. I flagged it as promoting hate. You should too.
