The aggrieved require enemies as targets for anger.
The subject of an email from American Family Association, an anti-LGBTQ hate group reads: “The Threat of ‘Gay Christianity.'” Long before we get to “Gay Christianity,” Hate Group Leader Tim Wildmon has a list of self-manufactured grievances and those who have treated the hate group so awfully.
It’s going to be a long hot summer … I’m talking about the battle between the emboldened Left—which is flat out pushing the nation toward godless Marxism—and those of us who are standing firm in the conviction that America’s only hope is a return to our Christian foundations.
I truly wish that I could question some of these self-righteous morons. Tim Wildmon couldn’t explain Marxism if his life depended on it. He is just parroting right wing strawman arguments.
The logical fallacy is created by replacing real opponents with mythical Marxists who are easy to condemn without any evidence. Being a Marxist is sufficient to deem someone an enemy.
Add to that the “Christian Nation” mythology and a controversy which does not exist becomes palpable.
“The whole world is against us!“
It’s hard to understand why our nation’s dominant institutions—business, education, the arts, media, government, entertainment, even some in the church—have aligned against life, biblical morality, free speech, marriage and family, and even love.
The above is a combination of two logical fallacies: Hasty generalization and its parent, the causal fallacy.
The generalization is that institutions that do not align with AFA oppose life, morality, free speech and so on, … “and even love.” The causal fallacy is created by the lack of evidence to support the cause or even to prove that a cause exists. This becomes clearer in the next bit of mania:
“Identifying enemies can have the ka-CHING effect.”
Specifically, I’m thinking about how Amazon Prime recently censored AFA.
I’m still shaking my head over the streaming service’s refusal to offer our new documentary, In His Image: Delighting in God’s Plan for Gender and Sexuality.
No, I’m not surprised, but I am disgusted at the hypocrisy and callousness. Amazon Prime offers every kind of degrading material imaginable—including hardcore pornography and an entire LGBTQ movie collection—but refuses a fair-minded film that is well-researched, has world-class production values, and whose touchstones are truth and compassion for hurting people.
Is stupidity a logical fallacy?
It’s hard to know if this is stupidity or an assumption that AFA’s constituency is comprised of stupid people or both. Amazon Prime Video does have some tasteless and idiotic material available. However, expecting them to stream a promotion of bigotry is pretty stupid.
Tim Wildmon is quite cynical. He might have known, in advance, that Amazon would reject his homophobic and transphobic video jeremiad. If that is the case then the video was submitted for consideration in order to manufacture a controversy and an enemy.
Identifying enemies can have the ka-CHING effect.
The company is not even willing to discuss the matter. In its notice to AFA, the corporate giant wrote:“All review decisions are final, and this title may not be resubmitted or appealed.”
“… if homosexuality is an ‘ideology,’ then heterosexuality is also an ‘ideology.'”Disagreeing with AFA’s bigotry is an affront to God:
I know it’s not easy to oppose the anti-God forces that are massing within the dominant institutions I cited above. You risk being ridiculed and made a laughingstock. At AFA, we’ve felt the sting of that many times over the past 44 years.
Poor them! Whatever ridicule they have attracted is well-earned. The Southern Poverty Law Center’s decision to designate AFA a hate group is validated day after day.
Another enemy. It’s all about selling an anti-LGBTQ video:
One such resource is a new AFA Cultural Institute DVD presentation that reveals how the influence of LGBTQ ideology has slowly eroded a biblical perspective within evangelical Christianity. It has actually changed the way many Christians think and talk about homosexuality. This unbiblical ideology is convincing many within the church to “be accepting and inclusive” while bullying into silence those who remain faithful to Scripture.
That’s why it is critically important that you get a copy of Understanding the Dangers of ‘Gay Christianity’ produced by American Family Studios.
Gay Christians are the enemy of AFA and its supporters. Sexual orientation is supposedly an ideology. Yet they don’t stop to think that, if homosexuality is an “ideology,” then heterosexuality is also an “ideology.”
There is some truth to the above quote from Wildmon. Christians have changed their opinions of gay people. The reason for doing so is that most people agree that sexual orientation is not a choice. The unnamed enemies are objective truth and science.
AFA: “Give us some money and let me tell you about more enemies.”
Furthermore, when did being kind to others become “unbiblical?” Note how they have become the victims of bullying. This is the standard excuse for bigotry being a minority view. According to the argument, hordes of people refuse to demonize LGBTQ people because they have been “bullied into silence.”
The truth is that people are not prejudiced against LGBTQ people for two reasons:
- Those LGBTQ people might be family, friends, coworkers and neighbors.
- The realization that there is no reason to denigrate people based on their sexuality which represents a perfectly normal variance among humans.
The “bullied” motif serves two purposes. First, it provides an explanation for why AFA is in the minority. Secondly, it prevents AFA from identifying fellow Christians as enemies. “They are not against us. They are afraid of the large forces that oppose us.”“Give us some money and let me tell you about more enemies.”
In appreciation for your support for AFA, I want you to have Understanding the Dangers of ‘Gay Christianity.’
As I mentioned earlier, the promotion of homosexuality and gender madness is proceeding nonstop among the major influencers of our culture. Consider these four recent examples:
- Marvel Comics announced in March that, for the first time in the company’s history, Captain America will be portrayed as a “new LGBTQ+ hero.
- In California, a judge ruled that a “throuple”—not a couple, but three homosexual men—are to be listed on the birth certificates of two children.
- The city council of Cambridge, Massachusetts, became the second in the state to legally recognize polyamory with a domestic partnership ordinance. In case you’re wondering, polyamory is when a person has simultaneous, romantic relationships with multiple partners, and polygamy is when multiple people are legally married to each other.
The interesting thing about that enemies list and their misdeeds is that none of those things affect AFA or its supporters. Furthermore despite Wildmon’s introduction regarding “dangers,” none of those things have anything to do with gay Christians.
“Unfortunately for us, we subsidize all nonprofit organizations — including American Family Association, an anti-LGBTQ hate group.”
By the way, AFA predicted years ago that if homosexual “marriage” was ever legalized, polyamory and polygamy would be next.
AFA was wrong then and it is wrong now! The logical fallacy is post hoc ergo propter hoc; the confusion between correlation and causation.
Nevertheless, polygamy remains illegal. There exists no evidence to support the idea that the actions of a municipality in Massachusetts are, in any way, the result of marriage equality.
Furthermore, polyamory has existed since the beginning of time. A year or two elapsed between when ancient Mesopotamians, Greeks and Assyrians practiced polyamory (possibly bigamy) and the ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges.
In point of fact, one needs only to consult Genesis: “Lamech married two women.” That, too, preceded marriage equality by a decade or two. So don’t fucking tell me that polyamory and polygamy are somehow related to same-sex marriage.
The enemies list, interrupted by bullshit about polygamy, continues:
- When Oral Roberts University basketball team upset Ohio State and Florida in the NCAA championship tournament, USA Today former columnist Hemal Jhaveri complained that the evangelical university’s “deeply bigoted anti-LGBTQ+ polices can’t and shouldn’t be ignored.” She insisted that the beliefs and practices of ORU were so bad that the NCAA “should ban them from NCAA competition.”
No doubt, America is trending backward to pagan sexuality, and if we speak out against that downward slide, we can expect to pay a price.
By the way, what was so bad about pagans? Paganism is just a pejorative that has been used by Christians since the fourth century to describe people that they did not approve of. Ding the competitors.
It is true that some ancient religious rites included human sacrifices. So has Christianity if one understands, for example, the ethnic cleansing of Native Americans. Both acts were done to appease a deity.
Moreover, Wildmon is claiming that the opinions of one columnist with very limited influence means that we are going into the proverbial “hell in a handbag.”
It is just more bullshit but Wildmon knows that his constituency will believe it. If they ever figure out how they have been manipulated, AFA comes to an end. Yet they are part of the MAGA crowd which has proven how resistant it is to logic, curiosity and critical thinking. The grift:
Prayerfully consider a generous financial gift to AFA.
Unfortunately for them, they will never review the organization’s tax return. Unfortunately for us, we subsidize all nonprofit organizations — including American Family Association, an anti-LGBTQ hate group.
