One teacher seems to think that her religious beliefs are more important than her students’ safety.
The Loudoun County Public Schools board adopted Policy 8040 by a vote of 7-2. The policy requires staff to use a student’s preferred pronouns and name. Accidentally misgendering or deadnaming a student would not be a violation of policy. Intentionally and persistently doing so would be a violation.
The policy also provides access to gender-appropriate facilities. Each school within the district is statistically likely to have about four transgender students.
In an open meeting the board heard from a number of people on both sides of the issue. During the hearing one teacher, Laura Morris, quit her job while speaking to the board.
Among her comments, Morris said: “This summer, I have struggled with the idea of returning to school knowing that I’ll be working yet again with a school division that, despite its shiny tech and flashy salary, promotes political ideologies that do not square with who I am as a believer in Christ.”
You would think that the school board was forcing Laura Morris to transition to a male. Furthermore, the “believer in Christ” phrasing is just a means of demonstrating disapproval and bigotry in an open meeting. People are supposed to give bigotry a pass when it is based on religious belief.
“Imagine if some Muslim teacher had a shit fit every time the cafeteria served pork.”
Morris added: “You no longer value me or many other teachers you’ve employed in this county.” Never mind that school policies are supposed to be primarily about how students are treated. Moreover, how does treating a particularly vulnerable minority with kindness make any statement about the extent that the school district values teachers?
Christian privilege often accompanies zero-sum thinking. Anything that benefits LGBTQ persons is a detriment to Christians.
Alliance Defending Freedom, a hate group representing Byron “Tanner” Cross, the teacher placed on leave after criticizing the Loudoun County Public Schools’ transgender protections, is asking the Circuit Court to add two more teachers to the lawsuit and to halt the school district’s implementation of Policy 8040.
“Quitting a job because of pronouns is rather petty.”
Those two geniuses are Monica Gill, a history teacher at Loudoun County High School, and Kim Wright, a Smart’s Mill Middle School English teacher. Oh the poor things are just so terribly stressed out over having to treat trans kids with the respect that they deserve.
Meanwhile Laura Morris is now a hero on Fox News and among the faithful. For what? Being a bigot?
Quitting a job because of pronouns is rather petty. I get it. As a Christian these people do not approve of transgender kids. In no way does that belief require them to demonstrate their disapproval through misgendering or deadnaming their students.
According to Alliance Defending Freedom: “This policy harms the very students it claims to protect.” Seriously? The bigots are doing the trans kids a favor?
Imagine if some Muslim teacher had a shit fit every time the cafeteria served pork.
