A number of Christian pressure groups have been given status as churches. While they are legitimately nonprofit (501[c]3) organizations, when designated as churches they are not required to file an annual report with the Internal Revenue Service. Those reports are available for public inspection.

The reason that these groups seek status as a church is to obfuscate their finances. Furthemore, church status makes them virtually audit-proof.

Among these organizations are hate groups like Liberty Counsel and Family Research Council. Making matters worse is the fact that these organizations control political nonprofit organizations.

My second mistake was inadvertently revealed by a Biden staffer this week.”

I gave up on trying to convince the IRS to reverse their errors These designations are errors because the decisions are not in conformity with applicable tax law.

My first mistake was giving up too easily. IRS Commissioner Charles P. Rettig is a Trump appointee. Personally I think that Rettig is a toadie. However, there are other paths within the Service including the IG.

Moreover, Secretary of the Treasury, Janet Yellen should have been a primary target. I failed to even “cc” her in my correspondence.

My second mistake was inadvertently revealed by a Biden staffer this week. I made some very stupid assumptions. Among those was the belief that people understood that reversing a church designation did not constitute a revocation of nonprofit status.

I continue to believe that this is an important matter. It will be pursued with a revised approach.
