Craig DeRoche
Craig DeRoche, Family Policy Alliance, finds it important to advance bigotry in service to religion.

The same people who claim to be terrified of teaching kids about slavery and segregation have no problem teaching bigotry towards a different “other.”

“Craig DeRoche is entitled to his religious views. That does not serve as an entitlement to promote bigotry.”

Craig DeRoche, president of Family Policy Alliance (the political wing of Focus on the Family) is obsessed with the existence of transgender persons. Today in a money-grubbing email, Mr. DeRoche insists that our society is going to hell in a handbag. One reason is this:

To pile on, Twitter has cancelled Congressman Jim Banks, the Chairman of the largest conservative caucus in the House and graduate of Family Policy Foundation’s Statesmen Academy. Why? – for correctly pointing out that President Biden’s appointment of Dr. Rachel Levine, a man who identifies as a woman, to be the “first female four star Admiral in our armed services history” is an insult to every woman who has served our country and earned their rank in the military.

Among the things that DeRoche finds correct is the notion that a transgender woman is a “man who identifies as a woman.” DeRoche is attempting to marginalize a transgender woman by interjecting a sense of choice into gender identity. Craig DeRoche is not a very smart man. Perhaps he is just re-vomiting transphobic rhetoric without a realization of what he is doing.

As for the “insult to every woman,” DeRoche knows perfectly well that he is insulting Dr. Levine as well as every transgender person in the nation. Craig DeRoche is a rabid bigot.

“The only thing that Craig DeRoche sees in Dr. Rachel Levine is that she is a transgender woman.”

Tt has been policy since 1965 that every assistant secretary of health is an admiral in the United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps. Therefore, according to DeRoche’s “logic,” Dr. Levine’s predecessor, Brett P. Giroir, posed “an insult to every [man] who has served our country and earned their rank in the military.” The rank is earned by virtue of the position.

Ah, but Dr. Levine is different. She is a transgender woman and DeRoche does not approve of transgender person. DeRoche’s disapproval is born of scriptural literalism.

While we are on that subject, let’s discuss hypocrisy. According to Matthew 7:1-5:

Judge not, that ye be not judged.

For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.

And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?

Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye?

Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye.

“Thine own eye?” The only thing that Craig DeRoche sees in Dr. Rachel Levine is that she is a transgender woman. Nothing else matters. On second thought, the fact that she is Jewish doesn’t help. Craig DeRoche is an anti-Semite as well but he will try to obscure that with statements in support of Christian Zionism.

The anti-Semitic sentiments are suppressed because folks like DeRoche know that society won’t tolerate it. Nevertheless, those sentiments exist. They extend to anyone who does not accept Jesus Christ as their “lord and savior.”

“Dr. Levine demonstrates to children that their careers and endeavors are not limited by their sexuality.”

Dr. Levine’s years of public service, her stellar reputation as a board-certified pediatrician and her skills are irrelevant to DeRoche. In 2015 Dr. Levine became physician general of Pennsylvania.

An interesting thing happened in 2017. The governor nominated Levine to be the state’s secretary of health. The state senate unanimously confirmed the appointment. That means that the Republican majority agreed that Dr. Levine was highly qualified for the position. Moreover, we must assume that she did a splendid job as physician general.

Allow me to return to the real world. I need the respite.

There are millions of kids in this nation whose sexuality subjects them to the disapproval of schmucks like Craig DeRoche. Furthermore, these include thousands of transgender kids.

Those youths did not choose to be transgender whimsically. They became transgender because it is the only way to mitigate the symptoms of a serious medical condition. Moreover, there are no alternatives supported by medical science.

Dr. Levine did not sign up to be a role model. However, the fact that she occupies a senior position in the government (including being a four star admiral) is vitally important. Dr. Levine demonstrates to children that their careers and endeavors are not limited by their sexuality.

Dr. Levine sends a positive message of hope and the rewards of achievement. Craig DeRoche sends a negative message. DeRoche insists on dispensing shame.

Mr. DeRoche is entitled to his religious views. That does not serve as an entitlement to promote bigotry.
