American Life League

American Life League decided that it would be a good idea to review the compensation of the CEOs of Planned Parenthood affiliates. Yes, those executives are well compensated. So what? American Life League seems to have concluded that high compensation is a measure of evil. Perhaps they are correct.

Those numbers were echoed to the Daily Wire and then re-echoed throughout the conservative Christian echosphere.

American Life League is a small Catholic nonprofit organization. 2019 revenues were $3.8 million. The organization employs about 25 people and is headed by Judith Brown and Hugh Brown who are unpaid volunteers. American Life League is dedicated to the proposition that women are not entitled to reproductive choice.

In other words, American Life League is wed to the notion that they are entitled to make decisions for other women regardless of whether or not those women are Catholic adherents. It is the arrogance associated with the belief that Church teachings must be applied to everyone; Protestants, Jews, Buddhists and Muslims.

As of December 11, 2021 American Life League had not filed its 2020 tax return (Form 990) with the Internal Revenue Service. With a six month extension, the filing was due no later than November 15, 2021. Special privilege no doubt. The IRS has one due date; God has another.

The highest paid Planned Parenthood CEO was identified as Darrah D. Johnson of Planned Parenthood Pacific Southwest. Johnson’s total compensation for 2020 was $616,926 which includes salary, pension contributions and other payments.

You know who else is an anti-choice Catholic warrior whose organization does not file timely tax returns according to the law? That would be Blowhard Bill Donohue of the Catholic League.

“… with about 3% of the revenues, Blowhard Bill takes home 171% of the compensation of the PPA affiliate’s CEO.”

Here is how the numbers shake out in U.S. dollars:

Planned Parenthood
Pacific Southwest
Catholic League Catholic League/PPA
CEO Darrah D. Johnson William A. Donohue
Tax Year 2020 2019
Revenues 105,611,824 3,544,759 3.36%
Surplus 18,593,125 205,568 1.11%
Total Compensation 616,926 1,053,127 170.71%
Compensation/Revenues 0.58% 29.71%
Compensation/Surplus 3.32% 512.30%

The bottom line is that, with about 3% of the revenues, Blowhard Bill takes home 171% of the compensation of the PPA affiliate’s CEO.

Chances are pretty good that Donohue pocketed even more in 2020. Of course Blowhard Bill files the tax return every two years rather than annually as required by law.

How about administrative oversight. During 2019 the Catholic League had 12 employees. During 2020, Planned Parenthood Pacific Southwest had 760 employees plus 130 independent contractors for a total of 890 people that Darrah Johnson was responsible for.

So what is that correlation of compensation to evil? The grossly over-compensated Blowhard Bill Donohue is an anti-LGBTQ bigot. That’s pretty evil.
